Cracks have begun to emerge in the opposition Tonse Alliance following the decision by the New Era Democratic (NED) party to officially withdraw from the coalition.

NED President, Exildah Mwenya, has also relinquished her position as the Alliance’s National Chairperson for Women.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by NED Secretary-General, Simon Mwanza, who said the party’s decision followed careful reflection and a renewed focus on strengthening its own structures.

Mwanza expressed gratitude to Tonse Alliance Chairman, Edgar Lungu, for the trust placed in the party and its leader.

“Dr Edgar Lungu is a wonderful man that we hold in very high esteem and will cherish his wisdom and guidance,” Mwanza said.

He also extended appreciation to alliance partners, civil society organisations, and church mother bodies for their cooperation.

“As members of the opposition, we remain resolved in our quest and fight for a better Zambia. As we approach the 2026 elections, we remain absolute that the Zambian people deserve better, and our fight for a prosperous Zambia will continue,” he added.
