Decomposed human remains have been discovered in a sewer line in Ndola during routine maintenance works carried out by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, said the remains—believed to be those of an adult—were found tied and lodged inside a manhole approximately 1.5 meters deep along Chimwemwe Road.

The manhole is part of a 15-inch main sewer line connected to the Kanini Sewage Treatment Plant.

“On Saturday, April 19, 2025, Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KWSC) received reports of sewer overflows affecting manholes within the Central Business District,” Nzovu stated.

In response, KWSC deployed an engineering team to inspect and resolve the issue.

During the operations on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, around 16:00 hours, a sanitation crew discovered the body in a severely decomposed state.

The Zambia Police Service and Ndola City Council’s Public Health Department were immediately alerted. Forensic officers later confirmed the remains as human.

A mobile phone was found near the body, though the identity of the deceased remains unknown.

“The body has since been respectfully buried, and investigations are ongoing. A comprehensive statement will be issued by the Zambia Police Service in due course,” Nzovu said.

He added that the sewer line has since been cleared and normal sanitation services restored in the affected areas.

The Ministry extended condolences to the deceased’s family and urged the public to report any suspicious activities to authorities.
