The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has reportedly approved 62 licence applications, and 8 construction permits in the petroleum, electricity, and renewable energy sub-sectors, representing a total investment pledge of KI I billion.
The 62 licences cover a range of energy-related activities, including manufacture, supply, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy generating equipment, and Road transportation of petroleum products.
This include distribution, import, and export of petroleum products, Importation, blending, packaging, distribution, and export of lubricants and Distribution and supply of electricity, according to ERB Manager for Public Relations, Namukolo Kasumpa.
Kasumpa in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, stated that the licences play a critical role in ensuring energy availability, enhancing operational efficiency, and promoting access to modern energy services and equipment across the country.
“This development reflects the ERB’s ongoing commitment to promoting a transparent and supportive regulatory environment that encourages sustainable investments in line with national energy policies,” she said.
Kasumpa highlighted that during its meeting held on April, 15, 2025 the Licensing Committee of the Board reviewed and approved specified applications which demonstrated continued investor confidence in Zambia’s energy sector.
She said the steady growth in investments highlights the country’s favourable regulatory framework and ERB’s efforts to streamline approval processes for investors to participate in the value chains.
“To maintain this momentum, the ERB remains focused on strengthening investor confidence through predictable, safe, and efficient regulatory processes that support timely application reviews and project implementation,” Kasumpa assured.
In terms of infrastructure development, three major construction permits were approved in the electricity and renewable energy sub-sector.
These include:
1. The Kalumbila-Kolwezi Interconnector Project (KKIP), a 200 kilometre, 330 kV transmission line by Enterprise Power Zambia Limited, valued at US$ 270 million,
2. A 100 MWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant, to be developed by Sun Share Energy Limited in Chief Moono’s area, Mumbwa District, worth US$ 75 million.
3. A 8 MWp Off-grid Solar PV Power Plant integrated with 20 MWh battery storage to be developed by Sany International (Zambia) Industrial Company Li at Ruida Mine, in Kasempa District of North-Western Province, with an investment of US$8 million.
Kasumpa stated that the KKIP project was a major step toward strengthening regional power trade and advancing government’s goal of attracting private sector investment in energy infrastructure.
