The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Munir Zulu to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour and fined him 2,000 penalty units for seditious practices.
Zulu, who is already serving a one-year sentence for defamation, was convicted on Wednesday by Senior Resident Magistrate Trevor Kasanda.
He faced one count of seditious practices, contrary to Section 57(1)(b), read together with Section 60(1)(e) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
According to prosecutors, Zulu posted a seditious statement on social media on September 6, 2023, alleging he had credible information that President Hakainde Hichilema planned to dissolve Parliament and call early elections.
The State argued that his remarks were likely to incite public discontent.
Magistrate Kasanda found him guilty and had initially deferred sentencing to Friday before delivering the final ruling.
