Main opposition party, PF, alleges growing discontent against ruling UPND administration

The Patriotic Front (PF) has claimed that the political climate was becoming increasingly hostile for the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) alleging that Zambians were growing disillusioned with unfulfilled campaign promises.

PF Ndola District vice-treasurer and Copperbelt mobilisation secretary, Kangwa Puta, claimed that recent incidents of public discontent were a sign that citizens no longer had confidence in the UPND administration.

“The UPND campaigned on lies, and propaganda. Now, reality has caught up with them, and Zambians can see through the unfulfilled promises,” Ms Puta said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

She cited recent episodes of public reaction directed at UPND officials, including Health Minister Elijah Muchima and Lufwanyama Member of Parliament Kenny Siachisumo, who were allegedly met with boos and walkouts during public appearances.

“These reactions are not isolated. They represent a growing national sentiment that President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND must go,” she said.

Puta criticized government’s development initiatives such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), Cash for Work, and Imita Ufole, describing them as unsustainable and ineffective in addressing the country’s pressing economic challenges.

“The UPND has failed to deliver. Hunger and poverty are worsening. With this trend, the political environment will only become more hostile,” she added.

She accused the ruling party of serving foreign interests at the expense of Zambian citizens and local businesses, particularly mine contractors and suppliers.

“Since taking office in 2021, the UPND has plunged the country into deeper poverty and economic hardship. Zambians are ready to vote them out in 2026. Being in opposition for 23 years doesn’t justify staying in government for 23 years,” she said.
