Man United edge Chelsea 1-0 as Cunha strike deepens Blues’ crisis

Manchester United boosted their Champions League hopes with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, thanks to a decisive first-half goal from Matheus Cunha.

United’s win at Stamford Bridge opens up a 10-point cushion in the race for a top-five finish, while Chelsea’s struggles continued, suffering a fourth consecutive league defeat without scoring.

Cunha fired home the only goal of the match with United’s sole shot on target, finishing from a pull-back by Bruno Fernandes. The goal came at a crucial moment, with Chelsea temporarily reduced to 10 men following an injury to Wesley Fofana.

According to ESPN, Chelsea now trail Liverpool by four points in the race for the top five, having played a game more. With several teams closing in, their hopes of European qualification are fading fast.

For United, managed by Michael Carrick, the result marks a return to form after a recent dip. While they created little beyond the goal, their organisation and discipline proved enough to frustrate the hosts.

Chelsea, under Liam Rosenior, created numerous chances but failed to convert. Cole Palmer appealed for a penalty early on, while Enzo Fernández came close with a curling effort that narrowly missed the target.

Brazilian youngster Estêvão Willian showed promise before being forced off early with a suspected hamstring injury.

Liam Delap had a goal ruled out for offside and later missed a golden opportunity, combining poorly with Fernández from a cross by Pedro Neto.

Chelsea’s frustrations continued in the second half, hitting the crossbar twice—first through Delap and later via a deflection from a delivery by Noussair Mazraoui. Robert Sánchez also made an important save to prevent an own goal.

Despite dominating large portions of the match, Chelsea lacked composure in front of goal, and their confidence appeared to wane as the game progressed.

The final whistle was met with loud boos from home supporters, reflecting growing frustration both on and off the pitch following protests against the club’s ownership earlier in the day.

The result leaves Manchester United firmly in control of their Champions League destiny, while Chelsea face an uphill battle to salvage their season.
