Late Rutter strike denies Spurs crucial win as Brighton hold on for 2-2 draw

A late equaliser from Georginio Rutter secured a 2-2 draw for Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, preventing Tottenham Hotspur from climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The emotional swings experienced by Spurs fans in the closing minutes reflected the tension surrounding their survival fight. Xavi Simons appeared to have sealed Tottenham’s first league win since December when his superb strike put Roberto De Zerbi’s side ahead, sparking feverish celebrations inside the stadium.

The match was reported by BBC Sport.

But those celebrations proved premature. Five minutes into eight added in stoppage time, Rutter delivered a crushing equaliser, leaving Spurs still one point from safety with five matches remaining.

Their situation may worsen, with relegation rivals Nottingham Forest and West Ham United yet to play.

“It’s like a defeat because we conceded a goal in extra time, but we played a great game,” Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi told BBC Sport.
“It’s tough to accept… We have to be stronger than this moment we are going through.”

Former Spurs striker Les Ferdinand criticised the team’s reaction to Simons’ goal, telling Sky Sports:
“If that was the 90th minute I could understand it… instead they jumped into the crowd.”

But ex-Premier League defender Ashley Williams disagreed, saying he had “no issue” with the celebrations, noting the emotion and importance of the moment.

Simons’ strike, which came with less than 15 minutes left, looked certain to hand Spurs a vital victory, but they extended their winless league run to 15 matches.

Rutter’s goal marked the second Brighton equaliser of the match. Kaoru Mitoma had earlier volleyed in just before halftime to cancel out an opener from Pedro Porro.

De Zerbi: Players “suffering too much”

Speaking to Sky Sports, De Zerbi said he was proud of his players despite the disappointment:

“I’m sorry for the result and for the players, because they are suffering too much… I think we deserved to win the game against one great Brighton side. But especially in that moment of the game, we couldn’t concede the goal of Georginio Rutter.”

Spurs’ survival hopes now hang precariously in the balance as the season enters its decisive final weeks.
