Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Gift Sialubalo, has urged elected and appointed officials in Local Authorities to be proactive in executing their mandates in order to accelerate service delivery in communities.

Sialubalo emphasized that elected leaders must lead by example through hard work if Local Authorities are to improve the quality of services and implement empowerment programmes that benefit more citizens.

He was speaking on Friday when he officiated at the symposium for the Society for Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) held at Twangale Park in Lusaka.

The symposium was held under the theme: “Fiscal Devolution, Leveraging on Technology: Key to Sustainable, Resilient and Improved Service Delivery.”

Sialubalo said the gathering provided an important platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and orienting decision-makers and policy implementers.

He underscored that meaningful progress in rural development could only be achieved through the delivery of essential socio-economic services such as clean drinking water, quality healthcare, and education.

“I want to urge you never to forget that the reason why Local Authorities exist is to provide municipal services to residents. This must be the shared commitment of both elected and appointed officials,” he said.

The Minister reiterated that the government expects Local Authorities to demonstrate progressive and impactful leadership that transforms the lives of citizens, calling for exemplary and visionary service from all local government players.

Meanwhile, Local Government Service Commission Vice-Chairperson Brian Ndumba called on officers in Local Authorities to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and dedication to their duties as public servants.
