Transport and Logistics, Minister, Frank Tayali, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming Zambia into a regional aviation hub, as the upgrade of Mansa Airport gains momentum under a strategic partnership with China Jiangsu.

Speaking during a high-level meeting with the Chairman of China Jiangsu International, Som Qinbo, in Lusaka, Tayali warmly welcomed the team to Zambia and expressed gratitude for the continued collaboration between Zambia and China.

He highlighted the historic and multifaceted relationship between the two nations, dating back to 1964, with notable achievements such as the construction of the TAZARA Railway.

Tayali reaffirmed the deep relationship between the two countries forged by its founding leaders, Chairman Mao Zedong of China, and Dr Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia.

“Africa’s growth hinges on resilient, modern infrastructure,” Tayali stated. “As Zambia is strategically positioned at the heart of the continent, we are determined to become a key aviation hub through investments like the Mansa Airport upgrade.”

The Mansa Airport project is being undertaken under the Design and Build model at an estimated cost of K740 million, with a project timeline of 17 months.

“Your commitment to progress, despite funding delays, demonstrates true partnership,” said the Minister, adding, “We remain engaged with the Ministry of Finance to expedite the release of funds and meet our contractual obligations.”

He said the progress on the project currently stood at 7 percent, with mobilisation and design review phases completed.

The Minister acknowledged challenges regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval and assured the contractor that the Ministry was working closely with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to secure the necessary approvals by April 30, 2025.

Tayali reiterated government’s focus on prudent resource management and affirmed that the Ministry would continue to monitor the project closely to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.

“We are committed to enhancing air connectivity across provincial centers and improving Zambia’s aviation infrastructure to drive economic growth and regional integration,” he concluded.
