Socialist Party (SP) President, Dr. Fred M’membe, has renewed calls for unity among opposition parties and civil society, warning that Zambia stands at a crossroads marked by deepening poverty and political disillusionment.
In a statement issued Tuesday, M’membe said the United Party for National Development (UPND) had betrayed the hopes that brought it to power, leaving citizens grappling with economic hardship, rising inequality, and deteriorating public services.
“The UPND has abandoned servant leadership in favour of the arrogance of power,” he said, adding, “This has left many Zambians disillusioned and desperate.”
M’membe criticized the government for failing to manage the economy, allowing the cost of living to spiral and public services to decline.

He described current policies as elitist and deceptive, worsening the plight of ordinary citizens.
He emphasized that no single group could solve the country’s problems alone, urging unity among political parties, civil society, labour unions, students, the Church, traditional leaders, farmers, and citizens.
“There is need to build a united front against an incompetent and uncaring regime,” he said, warning that divisions would only extend national suffering.
M’membe concluded by calling on Zambians to act with urgency, stressing that history would judge today’s leaders by their response to this defining moment.
