Police in Mporokoso District have arrested a 24-year-old woman, Carol Chileshe, for allegedly murdering her two-year-old son, Thomas Nasilele.

According to Assistant Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, the incident is believed to have occurred between 21:00 hours on May 21 and 10:00 hours on May 23, 2025, in Kape Village.

Chilabi said Chileshe was first seen returning from a drinking spree on May 21 without her child. When questioned by family members, she claimed to have left the boy with a relative.

However, on May 22, she was again seen alone, prompting concerned relatives to verify the child’s whereabouts.

“A check at the relative’s home revealed that the child was not there. This led the family to take the suspect to the police station for questioning,” Chilabi said.

He added that during interrogation, Chileshe admitted to throwing her son into a nearby well.

A police team, accompanied by the Fire Brigade from Mporokoso Town Council and led by the suspect, retrieved the child’s body from a 13-metre-deep well.

The body has since been taken to Mporokoso Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem.

Chilabi confirmed that Chileshe is in police custody and has been charged with murder.
