Police in Chisamba District have launched investigations into a shooting incident that left one person dead and another injured at Fish Pond Gold Mine Camps in the Chipembi area in the early hours of May 23, 2025.

According to police, the incident occurred around 02:00 hours when the victims, Gift Mwandu, 29, and Victor Mulenga, 35, were shot at by unknown assailants while sleeping in a tent at the mining site.

Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday.

Preliminary findings indicate that the victims stepped out of their tent after hearing gunshots, only to be fired upon again by three unidentified individuals seen at a distance.

Both were struck by the second round of gunfire.

The victims were rushed to Chipembi Rural Health Centre, where Gift Mwandu was pronounced dead on arrival. Mulenga was later referred to Liteta Hospital for further treatment.

“The suspects fled the scene and remain unidentified. The weapon used, suspected to be a shotgun, has not been recovered,” Chilabi stated.

He added that police investigations were ongoing and appealed to the public to report any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the attackers.
