The Chongwe Municipal Council has issued a stern warning to motorbike owners operating transport services without registration, stating that such activity was illegal and would attract penalties.
Council Public Relations Officer, Peter Sukwa, said on Thursday that registration of commercial motorbikes was a legal requirement under the Markets and Bus Stations Act of 2007, and is free of charge to applicants.
“It has come to the attention of the Council that some riders are operating illegally without registering their motorbikes,” he said in a statement.
Sukwa explained that the registration exercise, which began in October 2024, was managed by the Council’s Housing and Social Services Department and helped to maintain an accurate database of all commercial motorbikes in the district.
So far, only 37 motorbikes have been registered for legal operations.
“The Council will intensify enforcement against illegal operators. Any unregistered or non-compliant motorbikes found operating will be impounded, and owners will be required to pay a penalty fee of K782,” he warned.
Sukwa further stated that registered riders were required to pay a daily parking fee of K5, which supports the maintenance of order and services.
He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to promoting sanity, order, and safety in Chongwe’s transport sector and urged all stakeholders to comply with the registration requirements.
