A 39-year-old pharmacist of Rosedale Farm has appeared before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on charges related to the possession of suspected stolen government medicines.
Mubita Kongwa pleaded not guilty to a charge of being found in possession of property believed to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained, contrary to Section 319(a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
It is alleged that on May 22, 2024, in Lusaka, Kongwa was found with assorted medicinal drugs suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.
During trial, Kellys Mushota, a data assistant at the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), testified before Magistrate Amy Masoja. He explained that a joint operation involving ZAMMSA, the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA), and law enforcement officers led them to Komi Community Pharmacy in Kanyama.
Mushota told the court that according to the ZAMMSA tracking system, the batch numbers on the seized drugs matched those procured by the government. He said Kongwa failed to provide proof of purchase for the medicines in question.
Among the seized drugs were Flucoz-200, Envas 10, JMB Pharmaceuticals products, Cadila Pharmaceuticals’ 150mg/ml injection, Carbamazepine, oral rehydration salts, and other pharmaceuticals supplied by Mylan Laboratories Ltd, Lincoln Pharmaceuticals, FDC Limited, and Pharmanova (Z) Ltd.
The matter has been adjourned for continued trial.
