Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General, Raphael Nakachinda, has sparked controversy by declaring that late President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, would still “defeat” President Hakainde Hichilema in future election, even in death.
Speaking to PF supporters at the party’s district office in Kitwe on Tuesday, Nakachinda alluded to the the popularity of late Lungu, claiming that his legacy remains so influential that it continues to pose a political challenge to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
“I assure you, even in death, the late former President Edgar Lungu will defeat President Hichilema. Just maintain the unity you are known for,” Nakachinda told the crowd.
“In 2014, the party lost its founding father and almost collapsed, but we united and reclaimed the presidency. We must now apply the same resilience to rebuild and become formidable again,” he said.

Nakachinda expressed regret that the party had hoped for Lungu’s return to active politics to challenge President Hichilema in the next general election, but noted that the late President’s brand and legacy remained powerful symbols for PF’s resurgence.
He urged party members to remain committed and avoid internal wrangles as the PF prepares to choose a new leader.
“Our next leader will be chosen through a transparent process. Those jostling for positions must follow proper channels. President Lungu himself always emphasised the importance of transparency,” he said.
Nakachinda was in Kitwe to pay his last respects to the late Boniface Mutale, a PF member and former Kwacha Member of Parliament, who was laid to rest at Nkana East Cemetery.
