The Zambia Police has warned citizens against any acts of lawlessness, violence, or disorder as the country prepares to receive and mourn the late Sixth President, Edgar Lungu.
President Lungu, who passed away on June 5, 2025, in South Africa, will be repatriated on Wednesday, June 18, aboard a private jet expected to land at 14:00 hours at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, cautioned that any acts of disorder or illegality would not be tolerated and would attract firm legal action.
“As the nation enters this solemn period of mourning, we urge all members of the public and motorists to remain peaceful, respectful, and law-abiding,” he said.
Hamoonga said police officers would be actively deployed to ensure law and order throughout the mourning period.
He urged the public to conduct gatherings, processions, and vigils peacefully and in accordance with the law.
“This is a time for reflection and unity as we honour the life and legacy of our late former Head of State,” he said.
Hamoonga also appealed to motorists to follow all traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officers managing key routes and ceremonial areas during the mourning period.
“Respect for public and private property must be upheld at all times. Let us honour President Lungu’s memory with dignity and unity,” he added.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, confirmed that the body of the late President would arrive at the Presidential Pavilion at KKIA at 14:00 hours.
Kangwa said a military honours ceremony would be held at the Defence Force facility, with public attendance strictly by invitation.
“The body will then be taken to lie in state at his private residence, Plot No. 56660, Chifwema Road in New Kasama,” Kangwa said, adding that Belvedere Lodge will remain the designated venue for the state funeral.
In a related development, Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Spokesperson Anthony Chibuye has called on Zambians to turn out in large numbers to mourn the late President.
“As a party, we urge all our members in Lusaka to come out in large numbers, clad in our party regalia, and line the streets as the body is transported from KKIA to his residence,” Chibuye said.
He described it as a show of respect for the late President, Tonse Alliance Chairperson, and a long-time friend of the party.
“This act of lining the streets should continue in the coming days as the body is transported between his residence, Mulungushi International Conference Centre for body viewing, and the showgrounds,” Chibuye added.
