The Lusaka High Court has set April 20, 2026 as the trial date for Socialist Party president Fred M’membe, who has pleaded not guilty to an espionage charge linked to a documentary released in 2023.

M’membe is charged under Section 3 of the State Security Act, with the State alleging that he, together with unknown others, communicated information deemed prejudicial to Zambia’s national interests.

According to the indictment, the alleged offence occurred between August 26 and September 16, 2023.

The charge stems from a documentary titled The Grand Regional Scheme: How Foreign Powers and Local Elites Are Destroying Africa – Part 1, which was disseminated across various media platforms.

The State claims the material—filmed by Zimbabwean media—may have been intended to benefit foreign powers or individuals hostile to the Zambian government.

Appearing before Mwaka Ngoma, M’membe maintained his innocence, entering a plea of not guilty.

The matter has been adjourned to April 20, 2026, when trial is expected to commence.
