United Party for National Development (UPND) Chairperson for Elections, Gary Nkombo, has filed a police complaint against individuals behind social media claims suggesting he intends to challenge President Hakainde Hichilema for the party presidency at the upcoming convention.
Nkombo described the allegations as false, malicious, and designed to damage his reputation and sow division within the ruling party.
Speaking to journalists after lodging the complaint at Zambia Police Service Headquarters in Lusaka on Wednesday, Nkombo said the law must now take its course against those spreading misinformation.
“I want to urge the police to thoroughly investigate and apply the law fairly to those responsible. I also want to assure party members that I remain committed to the UPND and that they should not be swayed by false narratives,” he said.

The former Local Government and Rural Development Minister dismissed claims of any presidential ambitions, insisting he has no intention of leaving the party or standing against President Hichilema.
The Mazabuka Central lawmaker also cautioned the public against believing unverified content on social media, highlighting the risks of misinformation and political manipulation.
Nkombo further warned Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament for Matero, Miles Sampa, against using his social media platforms to spread content that could be perceived as divisive.
“I want to encourage my brother, the Matero MP Miles Sampa, to refrain from posting content that could be seen as undermining unity within our party. This kind of conduct will no longer be tolerated—we are going to use the available law now,” he said.
