UPND’s Bwalya seeks probe into claims by Nakacinda that late President Lungu was poisoned

UPND Presidential Support Programme Director General, Frank Bwalya, has called on law enforcement agencies to summon PF Secretary General, Raphael Nakacinda, regarding the allegations of poisoning of the late former President Edgar Lungu.

Nakacinda, previously involved in legal issues related to his statements while in South Africa recently told the international media that the late President Lungu may have been poisoned leading to his death.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Thursday held at the UPND Secretariat, Bwalya said the law enforcement agencies should determine if Nakacinda’s allegations of poisoning former President Lungu constituted a crime.

He said the outcome of the investigation would depend on the specifics of the allegations and the legal framework in Zambia.

“The Patriotic Front (PF) is accused of exploiting the death of former President Edgar Lungu for political leverage, potentially destabilizing the country,” Bwalya alleged.

He said the former ruling party was busy making inflammatory statements, inciting tensions, or manipulating public sentiment for political gain and that most of them would be arrested after the funeral.

Bwalya encouraged the law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent and address any potential security threats now and after the burial of the country’s former president.

“The PF’s actions could further divide the country along political lines, exacerbating existing tensions. The situation could escalate into unrest, protests, or other forms of instability, posing a challenge to national security and peace,” he warned.

Bwalya called on political leaders, including those from the PF, the Church, Civil Society Organizations to prioritize national unity and stability over partisan interests.

He encouraged open and constructive dialogue between different political stakeholders in order to help to de-escalate tensions and promote a peaceful resolution.

“The government has given its position that it will respect the wishes of the family to late President Lungu and we are hoping a lasting solution is found for his body to be quickly repatriated to his country,” Bwalya stated.

He emphasized that by working together, Zambians would be promoting a peaceful and stable environment, respecting the memory of former President Lungu and ensuring the well-being of the nation.

In April 2025, Nakacinda denied charges of seditious practices after allegedly urging PF members to go to Presideng Lungu’s house, which was seen as proposing violence and placing President Hakainde Hichilema in a dictatorial position.

Nakacinda has also been detained by police over statements made in 2022 regarding pre-marked ballot papers during by-elections, with allegations of failing to obey a statutory duty.
