Zambia Institute of Architects demands accountability after fatal Luanshya building collapse

0

The Zambia Institute of Architects (ZIA) has called for justice following the recent collapse of a building under construction in Luanshya, which claimed the life of a construction worker.

The incident occurred during the extension of a privately owned clinic, raising serious concerns about non-compliance with construction regulations and professional standards.

ZIA President Munsuka Silungwe revealed that a joint investigation conducted by the Institute and local authorities found that the project had failed to meet critical building code requirements.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Silungwe cited several violations, including the use of unqualified personnel and the absence of a compliance ring — a key structural component in building safety.

He further disclosed that the extension was carried out without council-approved architectural or structural drawings, representing a major breach of both industry standards and municipal regulations.

“This level of negligence not only endangers lives but also severely undermines the credibility of the construction industry,” Silungwe said.

He urged law enforcement agencies to take swift and decisive action against those responsible, emphasizing that accountability is essential to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
