The Zambian government has formally invited the European Union (EU) to observe the country’s upcoming 2026 General Elections as part of efforts to promote electoral transparency and democratic governance.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, extended the invitation during a bilateral meeting with David McAllister, President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the African Union–EU Ministerial gathering in Brussels, Belgium, according to a statement issued by Hambaya Munang’andu, Zambia’s First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Embassy in Brussels.

The talks centred on strengthening Zambia–EU ties, with a particular focus on governance, electoral integrity, and institutional partnerships.

Haimbe expressed Zambia’s appreciation for the EU’s role in monitoring the 2021 General Elections and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles.

“The recent legal reforms, including the repeal of the law on the Defamation of the President, are part of Zambia’s broader efforts to promote media freedom and safeguard civil liberties,” Haimbe said.

In response, McAllister praised Zambia’s democratic progress and its peaceful political environment.

“The EU is ready to continue supporting Zambia and other like-minded nations committed to democratic principles and good governance,” he stated.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing a shared interest in deepening bilateral cooperation, especially in the promotion of democratic institutions and credible electoral processes.
