The Zambian government has called for enhanced collaboration with Turkiye in key economic and environmental areas, including climate-resilient agriculture, afforestation and reforestation programmes, waste management, the circular economy, and eco-tourism development.
Zambia is also seeking cooperation in renewable energy development and capacity building.
Green Economy and Environment Minister Mike Mposha made the call during a courtesy visit to his office by Turkish Ambassador to Zambia, Huseyin Barbaros Dicle, in Lusaka on Monday.
On climate-resilient agriculture, Mposha said Zambia was interested in joint research and pilot projects focused on climate-smart farming techniques and sustainable land use.
He added that the country was seeking collaboration on large-scale tree planting initiatives and sustainable forest management practices as part of its afforestation and reforestation efforts.
“The government also wants support in developing modern waste management systems and promoting recycling industries in the country,” Mposha said.
He said that: “We are also exploring investment partnerships to promote eco-tourism ventures that protect biodiversity.”
He noted that Zambia was working to expand its renewable energy portfolio and would benefit from Turkiye’s expertise in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power generation.
Mposha further expressed interest in exchange programmes, scholarships, and training opportunities for Zambian environmental scientists and policymakers.
He highlighted the longstanding diplomatic relations between Zambia and Turkiye, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared aspirations for socio-economic development.
“Zambia values its ties with Turkiye, which have been marked by productive engagements in education, health, infrastructure, and trade,” he said.
Mposha added: “This visit further signifies the commitment of our two nations to deepen collaboration, particularly in environmental protection and sustainable development—areas that are increasingly critical in the face of global environmental challenges.”
Meanwhile, Ambassador Dicle reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Zambia in areas of mutual interest.
