Vice President Mutale Nalumango has called on citizens to preserve the nation’s enduring legacy of peace, dialogue, mutual respect, and community spirit.

Speaking during the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Lusaka Showgrounds, Nalumango paid tribute to the country’s freedom fighters, urging Zambians to honour their sacrifices by strengthening unity and fostering national development.

She described Zambia’s peace and stability as a priceless inheritance achieved through collective effort and sacrifice.

The Vice president appealed to citizens to build on this foundation by investing in peacebuilding, economic empowerment, and human development.

Nalumango further underscored the importance of patriotism, respect for national symbols, and a strong work ethic to preserve the nation’s freedom and progress.

In her remarks, Lusaka Province Minister, Sheal Mulyata, said this year’s Independence celebration served as a reminder of Zambia’s unwavering commitment to building a prosperous and God-fearing nation.

Mulyata noted that over the past 61 years, Zambia has made remarkable strides in various sectors and must continue to strive toward an even brighter future.

Meanwhile, Colonel Likando Muyunda, Chairperson of the Organising Committee under the Defence Services, highlighted the symbolic significance of the flag-hoisting ceremony, saying it represented the country’s dedication to building a resilient and prosperous Zambia.

He recalled that during the 60th Independence Anniversary in 2024, the ceremony was held simultaneously in Lusaka and Ikeleng’i—the source of the Zambezi River, after which the country is named.

The event mirrored the historic first flag-raising on 23 October 1964, at midnight at the Independence Stadium, marking Zambia’s freedom from British rule.
