Zambia Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Kasapo Sundrea Kabende, has called for home-grown innovation and greater employee recognition as key pillars in shaping Zambia’s future of work.
Speaking during the signing of a new collective agreement between ZUFIAW and the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB) in Lusaka on Wednesday, Kabende said valuing workers was essential for building a resilient and motivated workforce.
“As we commemorate this milestone, we are reminded of this year’s Labour Day theme: Shaping Zambia’s Future of Work through Home-Grown Solutions for Inclusive Economic Growth. It is a timely call for institutions like Workcom to develop local solutions that provide effective occupational cover,” Kabende stated.

He also highlighted challenges with the Emoluments Commission over the past three years, citing a lack of support in negotiations. Nonetheless, he reaffirmed ZUFIAW’s commitment to securing cost-reflective wage increases for its members.
ZUFIAW President, Charles Mukuka, praised the spirit of collaboration that guided the negotiations, describing the process as a “partnership in action.”
On behalf of WCFCB management, Director of Finance Michelo Silungwe echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing mutual respect throughout the talks and lauding the business unit’s performance as a reflection of teamwork and shared values.
“Though we may have started on an interesting note, we quickly found our rhythm — and that’s exactly how it should be,” Silungwe said.
