34 escape death as Chipata-bound bus goes up in flames

Godfrey Chilabi ,Zambia police assistant public relations officer has confirmed, Jonda bus which was enroute to Chipata from Lusaka has been burned to ‘ashes’.

Chiyabi said police in Nyimba District of Eastern Province have recorded a fire incident involving a passenger bus that was destined for Lusaka from Chipata.

“This occurred on January 28, 2023, around 14:00 hours near Unyanya area along Great East Road 95km West of Nyimba Boma,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Involved was Lottie Mwale aged 35 of Chipata Motel in Chipa, District Chipata who was driving a Scania Marcopolo Bus registration number AJE 3160 a property of Jonda Bus Tours that was carrying 34 passengers on board.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident happened when the motor vehicle had its airbag burst and eventually caught fire.

Chiyabi said the driver and passengers escaped unhurt while the vehicle was completely burnt and reduced to ashes.
He said further investigations have been instituted
