Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Spokesperson, Caesar Liteta, says the party remains intact and focused on the 2026 general elections despite the death of its president, Edith Nawakwi.
In a statement on Sunday, Liteta announced that long-serving Vice President Chifumu Banda, SC, had automatically assumed the presidency in line with the party’s constitution.
“The FDD wishes to make it clear to both members and the general public that the party has had no leadership gap. Honourable Chifumu Banda assumed the presidency immediately after the demise of Edith Nawakwi, as per Article 46(e) of the FDD Constitution,” Liteta said.
He explained that the party’s constitution provided for a smooth transition of leadership, with the vice president automatically taking over in the event of the president’s death or incapacitation.
To that effect, Liteta said National Chairperson Potipher Mumamba Chungu had since assumed the role of Vice President and would hold both positions until further notice.
“The two leaders will guide the party until the next National Convention.
“There is no need for misplaced fears. Members must instead focus on reorganisation and mobilisation ahead of the President’s national tour, whose date will soon be announced,” Liteta said.

Liteta also reaffirmed the FDD’s commitment to contest the 2026 general elections, including participation in any upcoming parliamentary and local government by-elections.
He urged members to respect the leadership’s decision to continue working with other political parties under the Tonse Alliance.
“There will be changes in all party structures as we reposition ourselves for the 2026 elections,” he added.
As part of the internal reorganisation, Liteta announced the redeployment of Anthony Chibuye from Chairperson for International Relations to Chairperson for Information and Publicity, a move aimed at enhancing the party’s media visibility.
“We can only form government if we prepare adequately and win seats at both parliamentary and local government levels,” he said.
