IBA extends window for switch off hours by broadcast companies to September, 2025; renews licenses for nine

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has extended the temporary “cooling-off” period for radio and television stations, allowing them to switch off broadcasting equipment between midnight and 06:00 hours.

The new deadline is now set for September 30, 2025.

Initially scheduled to end in December 2024 and later extended to March 31, 2025, the window has now been prolonged a second time to assist broadcasters amid ongoing power challenges.

In a statement issued on Monday, IBA Acting Director-General, Susen Ndumingu, said the extension followed consultations with broadcasters and was aimed at helping them manage operational costs due to load management.

“After reassessing the situation, the authority has resolved to extend the measure until September 30, 2025, thereby ensuring continued support to broadcasting stations,” Ndumingu stated.

She noted that the initiative is part of IBA’s efforts to mitigate the financial burden placed on stations during the power deficit period.

Meanwhile, IBA renewed broadcasting licences for nine stations that met the regulatory requirements.

These included Kabangabanga Community Radio, Mpika Community Radio, Mwinilunga Community Radio, Maranatha Community Radio, and KNC Radio. Others are QFM, Zambezi FM Radio, Sun FM, and Muvi TV-Terrestrial.

Ndumingu clarified that radio broadcasting licences were valid for five years, while television licences last for 10 years.
