Govt moves to douse tension, asks citizens to resist pointing accusing fingers as Lungu’s body set to arrive for burial

Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, has described the late former President Edgar Lungu’s legacy as one of strong leadership and national unity.

Speaking on Hot FM’s Hot Seat programme, Mweetwa urged Zambians to refrain from issuing divisive or accusatory statements during the national mourning period, emphasizing that it should be a time for reflection and unity.

“Let us not use this moment to point fingers or dwell on who did or didn’t do something. This is a time to come together as a nation,” Mweetwa said.

The Information and Media Minister noted that as President Lungu’s remains arrive in the country, international attention will shift from South Africa—where the government, the family, and the Patriotic Front had been coordinating—to Zambia.

Mweetwa highlighted one of Lungu’s notable contributions during his time as Minister of Home Affairs, citing his role in resolving tensions around MPs needing police permission to visit their constituencies.

“It was under President Lungu’s leadership that Parliament resolved lawmakers should no longer be required to notify police when holding meetings in their own constituencies,” he recalled.

He further confirmed that government is working closely with the late President’s family to ensure that all burial arrangements reflected Zambian traditions and were handled with respect and collaboration.

“I was fortunate to have been both a friend and fellow parliamentarian to the late President. He once offered me a ministerial position, which I respectfully declined due to differing political ideologies,” Mweetwa shared.

He emphasized that Lungu deserved a dignified state funeral, befitting his service to the nation, and commended the Church for offering prayers for peace and unity during this period.

“President Hakainde Hichilema remains committed to a governance approach based on openness, consultation, and reconciliation,” Mweetwa. Even after we lay the sixth President to rest, we must continue to nurture unity and reconciliation in our country,” he said.

Mweetwa assured the nation that the government would continue to provide full support to the bereaved family, helping them transition through the difficult days ahead.
