President Hakainde Hichilema has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to ensure that the August 13, 2026 general elections were conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed ECZ Vice Chairperson, Major Vincent Mukanda, and Commissioner, Zevyanji Sinkala, at State House on Thursday, the President said credible elections were essential for the country’s democratic stability.

“Elections should not be driven by fear or intimidation, stressing that democracy can only thrive where processes are transparent and peaceful,” he said.

The President urged the Commission to protect the will of the people and ensure that all citizens were able to participate freely in the electoral process.

He also called on political leaders to promote unity and uphold law and order, warning that political competition should not divide the nation.

Hichilema said violence undermined national development, adding that peace and education remain key pillars for economic growth and stability.

He noted that government efforts to restore confidence in public institutions had contributed to improved investor sentiment, including significant investment inflows into the mining sector.

The President also congratulated Major Mukanda and Sinkala on their appointments, urging them to carry out their duties with integrity, professionalism and commitment to fairness.

Meanwhile, newly sworn-in ECZ Vice Chairperson, Major Vincent Mukanda, assured the public that the Commission remained committed to delivering credible elections.

He said the ECZ will work to ensure that the 2026 polls were free, fair and peaceful in line with the laws of Zambia.
