Kansanshi Mining Plc’s US$1.3 billion S3 expansion project in Solwezi has reportedly reached 80 percent completion, with commissioning on track for the second half of this year.

The development is expected to significantly boost Zambia’s copper production.

The update was announced during a tour of the site on Thursday by Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe, who was briefed on progress by Kansanshi Mining Assistant General Manager, Axel Kotten.

Kotten expressed confidence that the project would substantially increase copper output once operational.

Minister Kabuswe commended the progress made, noting the creation of jobs.

He underscored the project’s importance to the government’s goal of achieving 3 million tonnes of annual copper production by 2031.

He also urged Kansanshi Mining to engage more local contractors from Solwezi to ensure that the benefits of the project were felt within the surrounding communities, thereby enhancing local economic development.

The S3 expansion is considered a major milestone in Zambia’s mining sector, expected to drive long-term growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
