The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) has expressed concern over the lack of decisive action by political leaders to curb violent conduct by their cadres during by-elections, saying this amounts to silent endorsement of undemocratic behavior.
ADEG Executive Director, Gideon Musonda, emphasized the need for strong institutional leadership and effective enforcement of the law to ensure electoral fairness and accountability.
In an interview with Zambia Monitor on Thursday, Musonda stated that citizens were tired of empty promises and committee formations, and are instead demanding firm action from leaders when violence breaks out during electoral processes.
“There’s a tendency among political leaders to embrace violent individuals in the name of growing their parties. You’ll never hear of political parties taking stern action against such cadres, like expelling them,” Musonda said.
He stressed the importance of upholding the electoral code of conduct and ensuring those who incite or engage in violence are held accountable—regardless of their political affiliation.
Musonda also urged the Zambia Police to enforce the law impartially, while calling on party leadership to reject and discipline perpetrators of political violence.

“The lack of accountability and the inconsistent enforcement of the law will eventually undermine the integrity of the electoral process,” he warned.
As the country prepares for the 2026 general elections, Musonda called for stronger electoral governance and greater political accountability.
“Zambia has very good laws in place, but weak enforcement. Institutions often act with bias. Let the police act professionally and prevent incidents like the recent violence in Lumezi,” he said.
His remarks followed violent clashes between Tonse Alliance and UPND supporters in Lumezi Constituency, which led to injuries.
Police intervened to restore calm, and the violence did not extend to the nomination centre.
The Lumezi by-election is scheduled for June 26, 2025, following the incarceration of incumbent Member of Parliament Munir Zulu.
