Police have arrested a Mumbwa-based agro dealer, Andrew Hamunji, and a suspected truck driver in connection with the theft of 1,500 bags of fertilizer from the Export Trading Group (ETG) warehouse in Lusaka’s Chinika Industrial Area.

The theft, reported as a case of breaking into a building and committing a felony, is believed to have occurred between 18:00 hours on April 20 and 06:00 hours on April 21, 2025.

According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday by Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, 366 bags of Urea fertilizer have since been recovered from Hamunji’s warehouse in Mumbwa District, Central Province.

The breakthrough came after police received a tip-off leading to the apprehension of Sydney Muma, a 47-year-old suspected driver from Kanyama Compound.

Muma is believed to have transported the stolen fertilizer using a white MAN truck bearing registration number BAR 6490.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect led officers to Mumbwa, where the fertilizer had been delivered,” Chilabi stated.

In Mumbwa, police arrested Hamunji, aged 38, a businessman engaged in agro-dealing, who was found in possession of 366 bags of ETG-branded Urea fertilizer, each weighing 50 kilograms.

“The vehicle used in the transportation of the stolen goods has been impounded, and both suspects are currently in police custody,” Chilabi added.

Police say investigations into the matter have been intensified as they work to recover the remaining fertilizer and apprehend other possible suspect.
