The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) Presidential Support System has called on the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) to protect consumers from exploitation by businesses charging unfair prices.
Speaking during a media briefing on Monday at the UPND Secretariat in Lusaka, Party Presidential Support System Media Director, Frank Bwalya, said the party was encouraged by reports of declining mealie meal prices.
“We are happy with the price reductions in Livingstone and expect other regions to follow suit, especially for essential commodities like mealie meal,” Bwalya said.

He attributed the anticipated price reductions to the bumper harvest recorded in the 2024/2025 farming season and the recent drop in fuel prices, particularly diesel.
“With reduced production and transportation costs, it would be prudent for the business community to lower the prices of essential goods,” he added.
Bwalya expressed hope that Zambians would begin to feel the benefits of government efforts to lower the cost of living.
“We know that producers may not reduce prices on their own. This is why civil society and relevant authorities must do more to ensure prices go down so that our people are not exploited,” he said.
