As the Conference of All Parties (COP 28) kicks off in the United Arab Emirates’ Capital Dubai, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Africa, has called for the prioritization of climate actions within Africa’s food system.

WWF stressed the need for development of an effective roadmap by African leaders to bolster the implementation of Africa’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

In its statement of demand, issued in Lusaka on Thursday, WWF Africa advocated for the recognition and strengthening of the role of nature-based solutions as they are pivotal in mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

“A commitment from all parties to accelerate the energy transition, encompassing the phasing out of fossil fuels, a shift towards renewable energy, and ensuring affordable energy access for Africa,” reads the statement.

It also called for the prioritization of climate actions within Africa’s food systems to foster the development of more sustainable food systems.

It further called for the securing of tangible financial commitments from developed nations for Africa.

“This should be specifically allocated for adaptation and mitigation financing, along with the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund,” it stressed.
