ZAM president, Saga, harps on value addition in mining industry to boost govt revenue

The President of the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM), Ashu Saga, has urged the creation of deliberate platforms to strengthen the capacity of local suppliers in adding value to minerals such as copper.

In a telephone interview with Zambia Monitor on Saturday, Saga emphasized the importance of promoting and validating local content, stating that mineral value addition is critical to driving economic growth.

He explained that enhancing value addition within the mining sector would not only empower local suppliers but also significantly boost government revenue.

“Value addition creates employment opportunities for Zambians instead of exporting jobs to other countries,” Saga said.

He expressed concern that Zambia continued to export raw materials while importing finished products—a practice he described as counterproductive to the country’s economic development.

“This culture is slowing our economic growth because we are missing out on potential revenue from processed products,” he added.

Saga further noted that countries that processed the same minerals exported by Zambia were realizing greater revenues and broader economic benefits.
