The Zambia Correctional Service projects are reportedly set to harvest about 15,000 metric tonnes of maize from the over 3,000 hectares cultivated across its major farms.

The Service cultivated at its Chisamba, Luanshya, Mpika and Serenje Districts Farms, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu has announced.

Officially flagging-off the 2024/2025 winter maize harvest for the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) in Nansanga, Serenje District on Tuesday, Mwiimbu said the projected 15,000 metric tonnes maize harvest was reflection of policy in action.

He said with 3,171 hectares cultivated, including 1,510 hectares under irrigation, the projected maize harvest highlights the Service’s critical role in advancing food security and resilience.

Mwiimbu added that the milestone reflected the government’s unwavering commitment to national food security and sustainable agriculture.

“This success is not just a reflection of maize harvested, it is a reflection of policy in action and our collective resilience in the face of climate adversity,” said Mr. Mwiimbu in reference to the severe drought Zambia recently experienced.

He reinforced that despite power disruptions and limited funding, ZCS officers, inmates, and support teams have shown remarkable resilience by fully aligning their operations with President Hakainde Hichilema’s climate-proofing strategy for agriculture.

“The government will support the ZCS through improved energy access, scaled-up irrigation, enhanced funding, and institutional collaboration with key agricultural agencies,” Mwiimbu said.

He further endorsed the Service’s proposal to develop farm blocks and proceeded to call on all citizens to embrace agriculture as a national duty, so that together, Zambians could transform correctional farms into productive, rehabilitative, and development-driven institutions.
