Zambia receives over 86,000 cholera vaccine capsules donated by China

The Ministry of Health has announced that the country has received a donation of 86,670 oral cholera vaccine capsules from the Chinese government.

The consignment, manufactured by Shanghai United Cell Biotechnology arrived safely at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka on May 2, 2025, and has since been securely stored at the Ministry of Health’s designated cold chain facility.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Administration Dr. George Sinyangwe made the announcement in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday evening.

Sinyangwe said the vaccines were being maintained under strict temperature conditions of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, in accordance with international standards for vaccine storage and distribution.

He said this timely support was a testament to the enduring friendship and strong cooperation between Zambia and China, particularly in the area of public health.

“The donation will greatly enhance Zambia’s cholera prevention and control efforts, helping to safeguard communities at risk during the forthcoming high-risk season,” Sinyangwe stated.

He assured that the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders had put in place measures to ensure transportation and distribution of the vaccines with an efficient cold chain system to the areas of greatest need.

Sinyangwe expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese government for the gesture of solidarity with Zambia andnits people.

“This partnership underscores our shared commitment to strengthening public health systems and improving the well-being of our citizens,” he said.

Sinyangwe advised the public that further updates on the rollout of the vaccination campaign would be communicated by the Ministry in due course.
